MERRY CHRISTMAS Y.A.

It has been some time since our last contact so I though I would use the holiday time to share a few thoughts as we face the new year.
Let me remind you of a few basics as some have had a few questions. First, remember that YA is a movement and not some organization you join or have to qualify for. It has always been committed to a distinct philosophy of ministry and lifestyle. The concepts work in any context and for any age level as some of you who have built churches have discovered. It works because it is so scriptural and logical. Therefore, anyone whose life has been touched by YA in some fashion is welcome to this reunion. For example, I have met children of families who are now in ministry, they too are welcome.
Secondly, I emphasize again strongly that this gathering is not simply for the purpose of reminiscing. Bob Jones Sr. used to say that reminiscing was a sign of growing old and none of us are interested in acknowledging that reality, RIGHT!! My prayer is that this gathering will be a time of sharing love, encouraging each other, revival (if needed), and planning for an even more exciting future for some great YA ministry. PLEASE COME AS YOU ARE , BUT COME. If you make some changes for the better as a result then great, if not so be it. I love and revere all of you.
Third, some might feel that your accomplishments have not been as spectacular as someone else and you might be intimidated. WRONG!! Faithfulness is the only evaluation. Anything that anyone of us has ever done is by the grace of God alone.
As for more details of structure and logistics - that info is coming soon. Many have offered suggestions and help to work out all the details of a smooth operation. Priority at this point is planning and searching for folks we are still missing. Please help us with that.
I deeply appreciate the way that FACEBOOK is hooking up so many of us. I am amazed at how much it is expanding. Please forgive me if I am not responding more but we are still pretty involved in running Lassen Pines Retreat Center.
By the way, if you look up Lassen Pines on the Internet you will notice that sale. When we sell it to the right buyer , we are planning to switch our efforts to worldwide youth ministry missions projects.
Please keep sending in your Bios to Sheila. It is so important to help us all to know you and pray for you. Here are a couple of special prayer requests.
* Doug Warner's wife's battle with cancer
* Doug Turner's continued recovery
* Roscoe Brewer's recovery from liver surgery
* Safety for some folks ministry in dangerous areas whose names are held for security reasons.
If you have any special needs, share them with Sheila.

Thank you again for all you mean to Dottie and me and please know that we pray for all of you every morning. Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all of you from all 21 of the Luffs.

PS: No more cracks about kissing Dolphins!!!!!

- Youth Aflame Reunion - September 10-12, 2009

- Web site address - youthaflame.org

- Facebook - can be accessed by going to Facebook.com and searching for Youth Aflame Alumni. You'll have to join Facebook but it's a simple process.

305 days til the Youth Aflame Reunion!!!

Just a note: when you submit your bio don't expect it to immediately show up on the blog. I try my best to have them posted within 24 hours (most times less), so don't be confused if you don't see it immediately.

To SUBMIT your bio - go to youthaflame.org, click on "submit my bio" (left column), fill out the questions, and hit "submit". It's as easy as that!

To VIEW bios - go to youthaflame.org - click on "read others' bios" (left column).

We've added new people on the Master List. Both lists are attached.

More later,

Sheila

Thursday, October 23, 2008

Just want to clarify - when you submit your bio, the last selection you are asked to make is to choose to:

1. "include my information on the YouthAflame.org web site directory (Recommended)"
OR
2. "make my information ONLY available to Youth Aflame alumni".
Either choice you make is perfectly fine. I just want to clarify if you choose the second one that your bio WON'T SHOW UP on the blog page.

Following the reunion, with everyone's permission, we will be putting all of these bios in book/booklet form and will make them available for all. However, if you want people to read your bio prior to the reunion you need to check the FIRST box.

Again:

To SUBMIT your bio - go to youthaflame.org, click on "submit my bio" (left column), fill out the questions, and hit "submit". It's as easy as that!

To VIEW bios - go to youthaflame.org - click on "read others' bios" (left column).

Thanks,

Sheila

Due to conflicts with pre-scheduled events at Thomas Road, the Youth Aflame Reunion has been RESCHEDULED to September 10-12, 2009. I"m sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but thankful we found out when we still have time to make/change plans.

a note from Gordon

Dear Team YA:

I send this E-Mail in order to bring you up to date on my attitude about the reunion in 09. The inter- action on line has been amazing, especially thru FACEBOOK. The time period of the 70's and early 80's when we were in ministry together was a unique time for all of us and that period created a special bond between us.

However, Dr. Bob Jones Sr. said "Reminiscing is a sign of growing old." Now I am not only not willing to admit that 71 is old, but I would desire that our time together is much more than simply remembering the past but that it become a time of revival, recommitment, visionary thinking, reconnecting, planning together for the future and most of all encouragement. Collectively we have a lot of power and influence. I am sorry that it took us so long to do this thing but God is soverign and His timing is not ours. I am sure that the Devil wanted to bury the YA movement but he has failed. YA is alive and well!!

I would also like to address the fact that Youth Aflame became a legal non-profit ministry via Youth Alive. If Thomas Road agrees I want to change our name to Youth Alive/ Youth Aflame so that we can function as a legal identity. I will keep you informed on this. Jerry Jr. is on our side so I think it will not be a problem.

I want to thank all of you who have offered advice and ideas to Sheila relating to the reunion. I would much rather have your input as to what you think will work than just mine. All I want is one good shot at you all!!

Now, a word for any of you folks who may have feelings of failure either personally, spiritually, or in ministry effectiveness. No one is interested in checking up on anyone or evaluating you in any way. We are family, a team, and our fellowship is long overdue. COME AS YOU ARE. NOT ONE OF US HAVE BEEN DEVOID OF TROUBLE

I want to ask your indulgence in not keeping up with all the Facebook program. The numbers are becoming overwhelming. I will always confirm all contacts but may not get back with you. We are still operating camp.

I want to say that your Bio sketches are very important. What you are doing is significant to all of us. What you have been doing is amazing but there will not be enough time at the reunion to share it all publically.

Finally, someone on line mentioned a love offering for Dottie and I. Forget it! All of your 50th anniversay cards and gift certificates were more than enough. We feel that your faithfulness through the years is all the show of love we need. What I do propose is that we create a YA mission fund that we can build, perpetuate and make available to worthy YA projects. Let me know what you think of the idea. I will keep you informed on this project.

Love you all and pray for you every day,

Gordon

365 days til the Youth Aflame Reunion

That's right! One year from today the Reunion will begin! Can't wait to see you all there.

- Youth Aflame Reunion - September 24-27, 2009

- Web site address - youthaflame.org

- Facebook - can be accessed by going to Facebook.com and searching for Youth Aflame Alumni.

Things to remember:

1. ANYONE who played any part in Youth Aflame is welcome at this Reunion. Crew, puppet teams, Word of Life leaders, Treasure Island workers, Sunday School workers, etc. All are welcome and encouraged to be a part!

2. BIOS - thank you to the ones that have submitted their bios. Gordon specifically requested that every YA'er submit a bio. These will eventually be made into a book and be a nice memento for everyone.

To submit your bio - go to youthaflame.org, click on "submit my bio".

To view the bios - go to youthaflame.org, click on "read others' bio" on the left side of the page, OR on the same page, click on "view biographies on the original blog" at the top of the page in purple writing.

3. If you have information missing on the Master List (i.e. address, phone number, spouse's name) that you would like to have included, please email me at the above address.

I got an email from Jerry Falwell Jr., and wanted to pass it along to you. In part, it says: I have very warm memories of Youth Aflame and LU's first students. You guys are the heart and soul of LU. I am committed to keeping this school true to its roots and I need the help of the pioneers to make that happen. Jerry"

Special, huh? I was very pleased and it made Gordon smile :)

Please continue to help me find people!! We're making progress.

Sheila

Hey, everyone, I know you're hearing from me twice in one day and I apologize for that, but wanted you to know that you can read all the bios that are coming in by going to:

youthaflame.org
read others' bios (left hand side)

OR

same page
view biographies on the original blog (top of page in purple writing)

Sheila

When Gordon and I first met to discuss the Youth Aflame reunion (September 07) one of HIS requests was that each YAer create a brief bio. Spouses are more than welcome (and encouraged) to participate as well.

The biographical information you provide will be made available to other Youth Aflame Alumni. If you wish, the information will also be made available on our website, YouthAflame.org - but only with your express permission.

For your convenience, we have prepared a form on the web site where you may answer these questions, all of which are optional:

Where are you living?
What is your occupation?
To whom are you married?
Names of children and grandchildren
What is your favorite memory and/or quote from Gordon?
How has his ministry affected your life/career?
What adventure has God allowed you to walk through in which He transformed your life?
Open question - anything you want to tell us

You may access the form at YouthAflame.org by clicking on the "submit my bio" link in the left column and following the prompts. It's easy!!

Or, you may simply send your information to me via email at larrysheila@sbcglobal.net.

Attached are the most recent lists. We keep making progress and I thank you for your help. Please continue. There's still lots of people we need to find.

More later,
Sheila

===========================

Hi everyone! The Reunion Snowball just keeps rolling along! Thanks for your help in locating people. Please don't stop! Both the Master List and the Names To Contact list are attached. You can see we're making progress.

I've been asked "who is included in Youth Aflame?" Youth Aflame includes anyone who was involved in any of the following - crew (lights, sound), puppet team, band, singing groups, Sunday School workers, etc. AND spouses!!!

There are new topics on the Discussion Boards (on Facebook). One is entitled Time Line. If you go to youthaflame.org and click on Time Line (left side of the page) it will direct you to the Youth Aflame Time Line. At the top you'll see "click here to suggest a Time Line event. Visit the other topics on the Discussion Boards and add your experiences.

Do you have written music book(s) that were used by any of the singing teams? If so, please email Christy Clayton Cousineau at rccousineau@sbcglobal.net.

We're firming up the list of activities for/during the Reunion. I'll be sending that out soon.

Sheila

Things are moving along nicely and people are getting excited about the Reunion. I love hearing about friends being reconnected after all these years!

I am adding new people to the Master List two or three times per week and I"m pleased about that. But we need to get real serious about finding those on the Names to Contact list. AND we need to add more names to that list, I'm sure.

Please take a few minutes and look over the list. PLEASE! See if you know where some of these people are.

- If you can tell me which state they were originally from, that would be helpful.

- If you know the married name for one of the girls (husbands first and last name), that would be helpful. It's almost impossible to search for them when I only have their maiden name.

- If you know one of the guys is a Pastor or where they might be employed, that would be helpful.

- If you're forwarding my emails re: the Reunion to someone else that needs the information, I need to know that persons name so I can follow up with them and get their contact information.

- If you are "friends" with someone on Facebook please check to see that they're on the Master List. If not, let me know.

- Some of you have family members (siblings) who were part of YA. Please send me their information.

Attached are the updated Master List and Names To Contact lists. PLEASE! I need your help!

Thanks,

Sheila

Dear Youth Aflamers:

In preparation for our reunion next year, we thought it would be great to compile a book of memories, dates, places, anecdotes, and words of wisdom. But we need your help!

Do you have a memory box or file in which you might have stashed old journals, calendars, or keepsakes? Would you mind taking some time to look through it? If you find photos, you can post those to the YA site on Facebook, and we can access them there.

If you find journals, calendars, or notes, could you either copy and mail, email, or fax them to me (Angie Hunt) or Lamar Keener, the compilers.

If you were involved in Youth Aflame in the early years (1971 - 1976), send your info to Lamar. His contact information is:
10951 Explorer Rd.
La Mesa, CA 91941
FAX 619 668 1115
email - lamar@thekeeners.com

If you were involved with Youth Aflame in the later years (1977 - 1980), send your info to Angie Hunt. Her contact information is:
8092 Willow Court
Seminole, FL 33776
FAX 727 319 3326
email - hunthaven@gmail.com

We will need your information by December 31, 2008. This should give you time to clean out your attic. ;)

After we see what we have, we'll figure out how best to compile it into a book.

Thanks so much! Happy searching!

Angie Hunt

There are times in life when we all need people to pray for and with us, so I've started a Prayer and Praise section on the Discussion Boards.

Let's please keep it limited to members and immediate family of Youth Aflame. And don't forget to tell us the Praises when God answers!!

A new discussion has been posted on the Discussion Board. It's called Founding Year 1971 - the very first year. Did you attend LBC that year? What are some of your experiences and memories?

===========================================
More and more people are getting excited about our upcoming Reunion. I hope you've had a chance to glance at the pictures being posted on Facebook. You'll be pleased to recognize that none of us have changed a bit!!

- Please be planning and thinking about a LOVE OFFERING for Gordon and Dottie. If we all start putting a little money aside
now we should be able to present them with a nice surprise at the Reunion. There's certainly no way we could ever express
our gratitude for all the time they put into our lives, but this could be a small way to say "Thank you!"

- On Facebook, under Discussion Board please notice there are 3 discussions listed:
1. Where are you and what are you doing?
2. Your favorite ScareMare memories
3. Your favorite Luff quote
Enjoy reading these and don't forget to add your thoughts/memories there as well!!

- As you're browsing the pictures on Facebook if you know any names that need to be added please feel free to do so.

- Does anyone have pictures of ScareMare? Love to see them if you do.

- I think the theme for the Reunion has to be GET ALL EXCITED!, don't you?

More later,
Sheila

Here's another thought on how to be able to browse the pictures:

Go to the website (youthaflame.org) and
click on the Facebook Group link in the left column

Some of you are asking me how to find the YA group on Facebook - go to facebook.com and click on "Groups" on the left side. You'll have to become a member, but that's very simple.

Don't forget the YA web site is YouthAflame.org.

Take a look at the Photos on Youth Aflame's Facebook page. There's some "old" ones there. And, yes, there's some question marks and "do you know who this is" there, too. Don't forget we're old and can't remember sometimes. Please feel free to send me any names you might recognize or type them in yourself.

Enjoy another trip down Memory Lane.

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Sorry to be sending another message so quickly, but I've been asked to restate the web site. It's youthaflame.org

Regarding the bio - just email them to me. That might change later, but for now let's go with that.

Someone also reminded me that we're "old" people and to please make the font larger :) Hopefully this will be large enough.

Sheila

Youth Aflame Reunion, September 2009

Hello Youth Aflamers, it's only 413 DAYS TIL THE YA REUNION. How do I know that? It's scrolling across the top of our YA web site.

I'm so excited about the response that I've been receiving!! Several of you have joined our Youth Aflame web site and the Youth Aflame group on Facebook. Larry and I have been blessed again and again by reconnecting with "old" friends. I've heard, by way of the grapevine, that Gordon and Dottie are checking the web site daily and telling everyone at the camp about the Reunion. Don't forget they have a special day coming up.... Aug. 15th.

Here's some things to think about and work on:

1. Gordon has asked that everyone (whether they're able to attend or not) write up a bio of what you've done since leaving Liberty and what you're doing now. (Of course you will want to include what Gordon and Dottie have meant to your lives over the years.) Once we get these collected they will be made available to you.
2. Start thinking about pictures you have. Get them together and plan on bringing them with you to the Reunion. More on that later.
3. We would like to honor those people who have gone home to be with the Lord. If you've lost a loved one that was part of YA please contact me and let's get some ideas going.
4. I'm still needing some of your addresses, phone numbers, spouse's names (if applicable) for the Master List. Please send them to me.

Have a great day!
Sheila

Youth Aflame Reunion, September 2009

Hello Youth Aflame member(s)!!

For years it has been Gordon Luff's dream to put together a Youth Aflame reunion. Since he's been busy running Lassen Pines Christian Camp in Redding, California he has asked me to be the chair person and get this underway. SO, at his request (and with his encouragement!) I want to do this.

Here are the details as they stand today:

Date: September 24 - 27, 2009 (Thursday thru Sunday) NOT 2008!
Location: Liberty, Lynchburg
Cost: still working on that

As the time gets closer, Kendra Cook Penn has agreed to secure hotel rooms at a group rate, and that information will be provided later.

If you have not contacted me, please do so I can add you to the Master List and keep you informed as to what's happening and when. Please send me an e-mail and I'll set you up.

I am pleased to tell you that we have a Youth Aflame Alumni website that can be accessed at YouthAflame.org AND we also have a Facebook page that can be found here . I encourage you join us there and feel free to share your memories with all of us.

We're trying to locate music from all the singing teams, so if you have names of songs or copies of the music we would be thrilled to have them.

Larry and I are excited about this opportunity and anxious to see you all!
